I am using this course to supplement in homeschooling my 14 year old. We both have learned a lot from it. If you have the right level of understanding, this course will be excellent for you. If you have more understanding, it may be boring, and if you have less, you should go to Dr. Sellers’ "Mastering The Fundamentals of Mathematics" course first, which I did. Although I did fast-forward through some of the earlier lectures in that course, I did not fast-forward through any of this course. I simply wanted to be sure that I didn't miss a single important concept. I am happy to see that he also does the Algebra II course, where I am headed now.

Watch out for problem 10 - it is usually the trickiest. It would be easier to go the problems for instance in Chapter 10 if the graphs were on graph paper, hard to pick the second point. If you graph problem 10 on page 37, the points are not in a straight line - there must be an error.

Sellers’ courses are possibly the most clearly taught classes they’ve ever produced. Sellers is as close to a perfect instructor as you can get, and I say this as a teacher myself. Clear, measured, progresses through concepts at the perfect pace, increases the difficulty at the perfect rate, addresses the likely mistakes at just the right times. His presentation style is upbeat but not contrived and distracting. If your algebra skills have atrophied since high school, this is the course for you, but this is also inadvertently a course on how to teach.

After practicing for many years, I found that I forgot most of what I learned about math and algebra in school, so I decided to refresh my memory. I listened to this course in my car on my way back and forth to work, so I did most of it listening. Dr. Sellers is an excellent and effective teacher, evidenced by his ability to keep my attention and teach me even in the environment I mentioned. I liked that you gave some history about what you presented, a brief history about those who founded or contributed to the discipline: Euclid, Archimedes, Newton, and several others other western thinkers. I noticed that Dr Sellers didn't give any credit to its founder of Algebra Muhammed ibn Musa Al-Khawarismi (never mentioned his name). I thought this may be an oversight, but then he, during the course, discuss several formulas saying something like (not verbatum): This amazing formula dates to the 13th century, or this incredible formula is 800 years old now. Yet he would not mentioned the inventors. Guess what, non of them were westerners, which enforced my suspicion that he was intentionally avoiding giving credit to scientists from civilization other than western. Of course this is a personal side issue and I have no proof of the professor's intention, but I admit that to me this omissin was quite disappointing from a university professor. Naturally, this has no bearing on the value of the course, which I though was excellent. I don't know how high school or college students would react to it because I can speak only of my my own experience. For people like me, I highly recommend the course.

I recently jumped back in to online classes in order to wrap up a Bachelors Degree and found that even basic fractions completely escaped me. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Algebra for Everyone This is my second course review in my attempt to survey the math courses offered by TTC and also the second taught by Professor Sellers, the other being the introductory “Fundamentals of Math”. Unlike its precursor, Professor Sellers moves at a slightly quicker pace and also spends a bit more time with technical definitions and demonstrations. Even at a bit more of a rapid pace, Dr. Sellers never seems rushed either in his delivery, nor in bringing forth the content of the material. My only complaint is that he spends the first five (of 36) lectures reviewing material that anyone taking a beginning algebra course should already have cold. I expect that is because he developed the Fundamentals course after he had already completed his course on algebra. But don’t be fooled: although the course begins even before the beginning, by the time he gets to lecture 30 he is graphing rational functions, something that I did not learn until well after my long-ago algebra I. I’ve taken a lot of math over the years (all of those years were long ago) and I’ve had instructors, teachers and professors who ran the gamut from adequate to really, really good. But none managed to convey math in such an unhurried and carefully structured fashion as Dr. Sellers. His delivery is smooth and his speech is precise. One is never in doubt as to what he is saying, nor in the concepts that he is conveying. I really can’t imagine that anyone could not learn algebra from this professor (but if your basic math skills are rusty, consider "Fundamentals of Math" as a prereq). Highly recommended if you wish to prepare for an algebra course, or if you have a desire to refresh almost forgotten skills.

I have been simultaneously drawn to and intimidated by math, so purchasing Professor Sellers lectures was an act of courage, and one I am deeply grateful for. His lectures are clear, logical and well organized. Above all, he has a way of encouraging his listeners to not give up or get frustrated. I understand how one might be able to do that in person, but he does it in a video. He's really that good and if you are interested in math, these lectures will not disappoint.

Everything up through lecture 9 (slope of a line) has been great. Slope of a line started out great as well, however there seems to be an error. Slope= change in y/change in x Or: slope=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1), simple and reflected what I learned in Middle School. From here on "S" will represent "slope) The problem is that with one of the examples, he gave the following points: Point 1: (-2, 8) Point 2: (6, 7) Going off that, Point 1 should be (x1,y1) and point 2 should be (x2, y2) So given our equation, it should be S = (7 - 8)/(6 - (-2)) But the way he works it is: S = (8 - 7)/((-2) - 6), or: S = (y1 - y2)/(x1 - x2) I've watched it over again carefully trying to figure out if there's something I missed, and I haven't found anything, and Google has not been forthcoming in corroborating the way he worked that example. As I also do have Asperger's autism, it's driving me nuts trying to resolve the discrepancy. I hope the rest doesn't have issues such as this, because apart from this his lectures have been exceptional refreshers, and it's this little issue that is the only reason I have knocked 1 star off of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Learning Things I'd Forgotten + Filling in Gaps This overview of Algebra I did a great job helping me relearn things that I've forgotten over the decades since my first exposure to algebra as an eighth-grader, and Prof. Sellers' clear and thorough approach to the subject made me wish I'd had access to this course back then. Of special interest was the late-in-course section on number sequences and pattern recognition, a topic that I don't recall ever being covered in junior high or high school math courses I took -- a topic that really hurt me on college entrance exams and my own cataclysmic experience with the practice LSAT in college. Learning this material could have changed the course of my life, no hyperbole. This class and his earlier course on fundamentals of mathematics are helping me overcome a math phobia that set in after high school. Thank you so much for finding such a patient, supportive, and illuminating teacher for these courses.

Teaching math is not easy because it is dry but he makes it enjoyable. The content is most appropriate for algebra 1. The textbook with exercises and solutions is also very helpful. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Algebra I Course I listened to all 36 lectures of Algebra I and using the Course Guidebook did all the problems for each of the 36 lectures, in sequence. Prior to that I had taken Mastering the Fundamentals of Mathematics, also offered by the Great Courses by the same teacher, again watching each lecture and doing all the problems for each lecture. My conclusion is that Algebra I is a superb course taught by a very talented and patient teacher, Professor Sellers of Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Sellers frequently emphasizes common errors that students make, for avoidance, and so very patiently goes through each and every step to find solutions to the algebraic problems discussed. There are a few errors in the course book. For example, in lesson 36 for the second of the three equations solution 4b is used consistently instead of the correct 3b, and occasionally instead of a negative sign in front of a coefficient, a negative sign is put instead to the right of a superscript exponent, apparently a printing error. This is not a course for the gifted student. The gifted student will be bored by the laborious explanations of each step, even down to the grade school arithmetic used, in each of the numerous examples in the video lectures. For example even at the end of the course in lesson 36 Dr. Sellers is telling us that "11 minus 6 is 5", never omitting even the smallest arithmetic details for each problem worked on in the lectures. A gifted student could get a good text and self study or take something like the online free MIT OpenWare introductory algebra course, and follow the chicken scratches of impatient instructors who don’t want to teach, can’t teach, and would rather be doing their research. How populated universities are by deficient and haphazard teachers hired only for their research ability. Note also that most free openware math courses (including those offered online free by eg MIT or Yale) do not include assignment answers, as the professors hold them back so that they can use them in future classes. On the other hand, a slow or impoverished student might want to try one of the many free video math offerings by companies such as Coursera or EdX, where it seems anyone can put together a few lectures, pretend they can teach and get paid to put that course online with the sponsoring company, the sponsoring company seeming to be just an aggregator of wildly divergent quality and length courses, like for example (the also free) google news is for news. For most of us, that is those who are neither gifted nor particularly slow (and are willing to pay for quality and consistency) you will find that Algebra I from The Great Courses is a well paced course covering a semester’s worth of high school level introductory algebra concepts, taught by a superb instructor, with good graphics used throughout, and with a helpful, though condensed, course book (which includes answers to all the problems set forth) provided.

I realized quickly i had not forgotten much, but what i had misplaced over the years was revealed to me in a scholarly and perspicacious manner--The work book is the key--do the lectures but be determined with the work book an it makes the lectures easier to understand. I actually enjoyed the class, the easy lecture style, and the ability to see results so quickly (not in a hurry, but quicker than i thought).

About James A. Sellers

Dr. James A. Sellers is Professor of Mathematics and Director of Undergraduate Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics from The University of Texas at San Antonio and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Penn State. In the past few years, Professor Sellers has received the Teresa Cohen Mathematics Service Award from the Penn State Department of Mathematics and the Mathematical Association of America Allegheny Mountain Section Mentoring Award. More than 60 of Professor Sellers's research articles on partitions and related topics have been published in a wide variety of peer-reviewed journals. In 2008, he was a visiting scholar at the Isaac Newton Institute at the University of Cambridge. Professor Sellers has enjoyed many interactions at the high school and middle school levels. He has served as an instructor of middle-school students in the TexPREP program in San Antonio, Texas. He has also worked with Saxon Publishers on revisions to a number of its high-school textbooks. As a home educator and father of five, he has spoken to various home education organizations about mathematics curricula and teaching issues.
