Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding course The course brought to life Dante, the context of his life and writing and the Divine Comedy itself. My reading of the text was greatly enhanced by the course and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the two lecturers. I would recommend this course to everyone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Divine, it is not Having got several Courses by WC, and enjoyed them all, I was tempted to purchase this Course, even though I knew nothing of RH’s skills. As it turned out this decision proved to be terrible. Maybe TTC’s team could not make a decision on who should do the Course, seeing as they both teach at the same university. Each takes turns in espousing some, supposed, kernel of wisdom. Yet they both seem poised to grasp the plot from the other. After trying to watch this literary ping-pong match for several lectures, I gave up in disgust. However, I always try to be balanced in my reviews. So, a few months after penning the above, I decided to try some later lectures - namely 13-16. The transfer from one lecturer to the other was now more seamless, yet the subject matter continued to be underwhelming. As someone who knew little about this literary endeavour I was intrigued to learn more about why it is regarded as a seminal work. I now admit that I still don’t really know. Moreover, I am now convinced that I won’t be tempted to try to read it. I guess that in a perverse way that is a positive response. Unless you are a dedicated masochist, I do not - emphatically - recommend this Course.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Making an Epic Understandable I chose this course to fill a gap in my education and my goal was met thoroughly and delightfully. The lectures were easy to follow and reflected the professors' enthusiasm for the subject. Had I simply read The Commedia on my own, I would not have been able to follow the stories; that is, their interpretations and explanations are essential. Knowing the work is very complex and lengthy, they did an especially good job of selecting what parts to highlight and giving prompts and reminders so one can follow along. They ended their presentation with an especially sweet message about how there is more to learn and enjoy in the Commedia, and that we can make it personal, as it has been for those they have taught. I think they recorded this in 2001, but it doesn't feel old or outdated at all. Loved it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dante's Divine Comedy Comes to Life Dr. Cook and Dr. Herzman present 24 exceptional lectures on Dante's poetic spiritual pilgrimage. The well-organized partnership between the two is very impressive and shows the amount of preliminary planning that went into all of these talks. I have watched all of the lectures, some of them several times over, before progressing to the next. I highly recommend this series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not always easy to understand these lectures I'm happy I watched all 24 courses, but oftentimes Dr. Cook and Dr. Hertzman repeated each other's comments. It was easier to understand Dr. Cook's lectures. However, I got lost in the delivery/vocabulary of Dr. Hertzman's lectures. Clearly both Professors are passionate about this poem and that came across well. They have inspired me to read the poem.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Appreciated, but lacking I'm about halfway through this course, and while Profs. Cook (the stronger of the two) and Herzman offer a reasonable introduction to the poem, the delivery of Dr. Herzman comes across as just too extemporaneous and "winged" to me. For example, he will describe some aspect of the poem as "interesting" at least every minute, if not every 30 seconds. His non-use of descriptive vocabulary is very surprising for an English professor and makes me continually wonder about what words *could* have been used instead of the beyond-ubiquitous "interesting". As such, you may be better served with other teachers on this one.

Because of this, I did not come away feeling enlightened, and doubt I would invest in other courses without first taking a good look at the persons and manner of presentation. In sum, I was disappointed.

Dr. William R. Cook is the Distinguished Teaching Professor of History at the State University of New York at Geneseo, where he has taught since 1970. He earned his bachelor's degree cum laude from Wabash College and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa there. He was then awarded Woodrow Wilson and Herbert Lehman fellowships to study medieval history at Cornell University, where he earned his Ph.D. Professor Cook teaches courses in ancient and medieval history, the Renaissance and Reformation periods, and the Bible and Christian thought. Since 1983 Professor Cook has directed 11 Seminars for School Teachers for the National Endowment for the Humanities. His books include Images of St. Francis of Assisi and Francis of Assisi: The Way of Poverty and Humility. Dr. Cook contributed to the Cambridge Companion to Giotto and edits and contributes to The Art of the Franciscan Order in Italy. Among his many awards, Professor Cook has received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. In 1992 the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education named him New York State's Professor of the Year. In 2003 he received the first-ever CARA Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Medieval Studies from the Medieval Academy of America.

Dr. Ronald B. Herzman is Distinguished Teaching Professor of English at the State University of New York at Geneseo, where he has taught since 1969. He graduated with honors from Manhattan College and earned his master's degree and Ph.D. in English Literature from the University of Delaware. Dr. Herzman's teaching interests include Dante, Chaucer, Francis of Assisi, Shakespeare, the Bible, and Arthurian literature. He has written many articles and book chapters and is the coauthor of The Apocalyptic Imagination in Medieval Literature and coeditor of Four Romances of England. Professor Herzman received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1976, and in 1991, Manhattan College awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters. Professor Herzman and Professor William R. Cook have been collaborating intensively since 1973, when they team-taught a course at SUNY-Geneseo called The Age of Chaucer. Subsequent courses included The Age of Dante and The Age of Francis of Assisi. Both prolific writers in their own right, together they have published The Medieval World View with the Oxford University Press, currently in its second edition. In 2003, Professors Cook and Herzman were presented with the Medieval Academy of America's first-ever CARA Award for Excellence in Teaching Medieval Studies.
