Genome Mutations: Evolution’s Raw Material

Lecture no. 3 from the course: What Darwin Didn’t Know: The Modern Science of Evolution

Genome Mutations: Evolution’s Raw Material

Taught by Professor Scott Solomon | 33 min | Categories: The Great Courses Plus Online Science Course

The arrival of genetics in the early 20th century addressed what Darwin did not know about inheritance, but there was more to uncover: how do genes function, and where do variations come from? Trace the discovery of DNA as the carrier of genetic information and the realization that mutations and other structural changes in DNA are a source of the modifications that underlie natural selection.

Great lecture! As a side note: Nobel Prize Laureate Prof. Dr. James Watson was just recently heavily criticized by the New York Times and stripped off his titles at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island because he dared to put up the thesis that IQ differences between races (which can make up to 50 IQ points in average) seem to be mostly genetic. Given that we already know that the heritability of IQ for adults in western countries is somewhere between 80 and 86% this is a very sound thesis that should be elaborated. What a shame for science and the climate of political correctness that the media tries to shame scientists into submission instead of allowing any thesis to be discussed in the scientific community and tested with scientific methods, just because they fear that scientists might come up with evidence that certain groups don't like.
