Understanding the Periodic Table

Lecture no. 1 from the course: Plus Pilots: Understanding the Periodic Table

Understanding the Periodic Table

| 33 min | Categories: The Great Courses Plus Online Science Course

The periodic table of elements is something that is invariably hanging on the wall of science classrooms all over the world. Currently, it lists 118 elements—both found in nature and synthetically created—which make up everything we know. Join a senior lecturer of chemistry at Bowdoin College as she takes you through the history and logic that has gone into the periodic table. You’ll walk through the periodic table of elements, tracing the original elements and hearing the stories of how new elements were discovered, added, and organized over the centuries.

Feedback on the pilot? 1. Lecturer is great to listen to; precise diction and interesting intonation. 2. Use of video capabilities was appalling; I presume this is a work-in-progress as the lack of slide highlighting to reinforce the lecturer's statements means the visual of the PT was literally useless. I can look at a static poster just as well while listening to an audio of the material. If the course does not leverage dynamic visual aids then it will be a big disappointment.
