As others have noted the course is a little dated (2006). However, I've found the professor to be likable, interesting, and most importantly culturally adept. Anyone who feels a desire for up to the moment info can supplement with a standard textbook like Shillington's History of Africa (2018). I picked up the newest edition at amazon for $30. The value add here is a careful presentation of material. Strangely, the fact that the course is 13 years old is in some ways reassuring. Professor Vickery isn't reacting or counter reacting to America's post 2008 politics. He's just telling us what he knows. For example I've noticed when discussing the Colombian Exchange he didn't ask the cringe worthy and teeth grinding question why didn't the new world's African American slaves "run away". He asked the question appropriately. He carefully asked why they didn't "escape". This matters, bc a moment of reflection shows pets run away but prisoners of war escape. This is someone who perhaps has spent too much time in Africa to think "run away." That's what you get from this course. Absolutely worth five stars.
