Rated 2 out of 5 by from Keep it simple... and this course mean it. This course is an introductory course, i only practice 2 of the martial arts offerted: karate and muay thai, in these 2 arts of 3 episode long each, is a quick review of them not rocket sience but still heapful if you are new to them or want to repass kihon (basic), now, one thing i did not like was the constant interruption of the host, is annoying his almost obsession not to let the sensei or kru in those arts to be the ones who actually teach and share their knowledge and experience, or at least disscue the script with sensei and kru before and behind cameras, especially in japanese martial arts because Reiho (Respect/Etiquette) is one of the 7 main principles of budo. As a non practitioner of the rest of the arts i find them interesting even the ones show it by the host alone, he look and show great knowledge in his arts, but one is always a student and has to be more open to let other people be the instructor and apply to ourselves the old "watch and learn". Is a just and decent presentation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So much potential Several different martial arts (Karate, Judo, Taekwondo, Jeet Kune Do, Muay Thai, Kung Fu, Krav Maga, Tai Chi...) get 3 episodes to shine. The teachers do a great job in teaching their martial art and try their best to fit as much as possible into those episodes. Personally I joined a judo club and used those episodes as a crashcourse and it helped me tremendously in that regard since it covered more or less the content of the first 5-7 trainings (which is crazy if you think about it) and let me look up many concepts when needed. That said, it is hard for me to decide for who the course was made for. The big problem that there is not enough time for every martial art to really dig deep into learning (which of course comes with such a breadth of topics) which is especially sad since I would gladly buy full training courses of several of the teachers. Especially Kathy Long and Akira Fukuda are outstanding in how much they can convey in just 3 episodes. (The others are still very good, but those were my favorites). I really wished the great courses would do a follow up and make full sized courses with them like they have with David Dorian Ross and his Tai Chi, which were both in my collection and worth watching. It is really frustrating to see so much talent in one course and then realize that almost none of them has a course where you can dig deeper into their wisdom.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointing As an experienced martial artist, I was expecting more. A lot more. Instead, the instructor couldn't seem to decide if he wanted to explain a different art or teach an different art and you ended up with neither. The time spent in "drills" could have been used to talk about the history and philosophy of each art in greater detail, then provided a demonstration of basics, and then given the individual martial artists the opportunity to showcase the best of their art. It had to be frustrating for each of the artists in this video to be a part of such a shallow course. I have taken dozens of courses from "The Learning Company", "The Great Courses" and now, "Wondrium" and been doing so for 10 years. This was the least satisfying of all.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good as an overview, with some concerns. As a general overview, this is fine. Some of the practical demonstrations seem somewhat off target. To my mind, the purpose of self defense includes an active component of harming someone who is attacking you - this does not seem to be addressed as well as it could be. No one in thier right mind enjoys hurting others - It is, however, a core component as much as you trying not to get hurt. So much of what is shown here depends on timing and practice. This series states throughout that this course it is for demonstration purpose, and is primarily explanatory in nature. A fantastic part of this course is that it shows the various approaches through different types of martial arts.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Depends on the viewer This survey course would be very informative for beginners, especially those wondering which martial art to take. For advanced people, there are good little tips here and there in each episode, plus you get to see people performing and explaining bits of martial arts you may not have been exposed to. If you're advanced, you don't learn anything momentous from most classes you take anyway, even live ones, but despite 40 years in martial arts I got something out of each episode.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Martial Arts for Your Mind and Body Reasonably good value course if you get on sale, and don't expect too much. Some segments seemed more immediately useful than others (assuming you're not going on to take more professional lessons in person). I got DVD version to more easily watch on large TV.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really very good explanations and demos I watch a segment almost every night. I am learning so much not only about the martial arts and how to execute but also the meaning and philosophies behind it.
