Real Zen for Real Life

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional course, exceptionally well taught I have studied Buddhism and Hinduism (and other religions) at LMU in Los Angeles. Several of the best teachers I have experienced in undergraduate and graduate school taught those classes. Professor Davis is right up there with the best teachers I have had the privilege to learn from. His presentation technique and explanations are clear and easy to follow. However; Zen has philosophies that may be new to the student so you may be "rewinding" from time to time. He also covers the basics of Buddhism as taught by "the" Buddha . I suggest you read the Guide Book carefully with each lecture. If you are new to Buddhism you may want to research the basic teachings/philosophies of the Buddha himself. That is easy to do on the internet. However, that is not necessary. The course is very appropriately titled; it is real Zen for real life. This is really a course on examining your own life through the Zen methodology. Even if you do not pick up a practice of Zen the lessons may well give you thoughts to ponder in your daily life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Your Personal Teacher for Learning Zen As a young man, I learned about Buddhism, then eventually ran across the Zen practice. The beauty of Buddhism, and especially Zen, is that no overwhelming faith is required, only enough patience to try it, to prove to yourself that the meditation works. This course provides the necessary instruction. Many texts I have read over the years, to better my understanding of the Zen practice, spend too many words on the history of Buddhism and the interpretations of the Buddhist schools by many outsiders. What is sadder, is that, in these books, the description of the sitting meditation is given a light brush, with no comments or answers to questions the beginner will have. In this video Professor Davis has anticipated those questions and addresses the concerns about posture, comfort, time, distractions, benefits. You can think of the contents of this course as your private, personal teacher. Professor Davis leads you by the hand.

I have been interested in Zen off and on for years, but I had fallen out of reading Zen books or practicing meditation. This course has renewed my interest in both. The instructor has a strong background in philosophy, and so presented Zen in a way that I had not seen before. I found it more intellectually robust than the New Age 1960s Zen, culty nonsense Zen, or the self-help Zen you can find in bookstores. If you're interested in reading about Zen or practicing Zen meditation, it can be confusing and intimidating to start out. You meet the obstacles of watered-down or misleading interpretations of Zen, of needing at least some background in traditional Buddhism, of the difficulties of finding good translations of important texts, not to mention the difficulty of Zen thinking itself. This course moves those obstacles aside and gives you the start you need to reach real Zen studying and practice. Even for someone already well-versed in Buddhism and Zen will benefit from the clarity of instruction and wide-ranging expertise offered in the course, not to mention the bibliography in the course guidebook. The instructor is clear, highly authoritative on his subject, consistent in his speaking, detailed, good-humored -- everything you need in a teacher. I highly recommend this course! It is now one of my favorites of the Great Courses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Put a little Zen in your life As of this writing I have practiced TM for over 48 years. Since I first learned TM in 1972, I have been a student of what Aldous Huxley described in his 1945 book, first published in England, that was titled the Perennial Philosophy (PP). The PP is an extraction of all that is common to the metaphysical and mystical beliefs, practices and traditions of the east. These traditions include yoga, vedanta, sufism and of course zen. Of these traditions, zen, IMO, comes closest to articulating and exemplifying the unshakable content of the PP. In this course, the professor manages to extrapolate what can be described as what is most historically and traditionally salient about zen and balances it off with practical demonstrations of how zen is actually practiced. This approach is what makes this course both viable as an introduction and beneficial to any student interested in the efficacy of the PP or Buddhism itself. The course is informative, anecdotal, entertaining, persuasive and practical. It is all here including a summary of the Buddha's life, teachings and the historical emergence of the practice of zazen (just sitting) to encourage and reinforce the regular practice of meditation. Obviously, I highly recommend this course along with other Great Courses that teach us the benefits of regular meditation like the Great Courses of Mark Meusse among others.

About Bret W. Davis

Bret W. Davis is a Professor of Philosophy and the T.J. Higgins, S.J., Chair in Philosophy at Loyola University Maryland, where he also directs The Heart of Zen Meditation Group. He earned his PhD in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University.

 

Fluent in Japanese, Professor Davis has spent more than 13 years studying and teaching in Japan. He studied Buddhist thought at Otani University and Japanese philosophy at Kyoto University. He also trained as a lay practitioner at Shōkokuji, one of the main Rinzai Zen monasteries in Kyoto. In 2010, he was formally recognized as a teacher (sensei) and director of a Zen center by Kobayashi Gentoku Rōshi, the abbot of Shōkokuji.

 

Professor Davis has presented academic papers at international conferences in more than a dozen countries and has been invited to lecture at such distinguished institutions as Harvard University, Boston College, the University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, East China Normal University, the University of Munich, the University of Freiburg, and the Royal Institute of Philosophy in London. For his research sojourns in Japan and Germany, he has received grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the German Academic Exchange Service, and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. He also received the Nachbahr Award for outstanding scholarly accomplishment in the humanities from Loyola University Maryland.

 

Professor Davis is the author of Heidegger and the Will, the coeditor of Japanese and Continental Philosophy and Engaging Dōgen’s Zen, and the editor of The Oxford Handbook of Japanese Philosophy.
