Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating I found this course very interesting, both in being able to visit many sites without having to see past numerous tourists and also learning about recent archeological finds. Should I decide to travel there, I will have a much better idea about where to go and what to see.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Making the Bible come to life I am now a dedicated fan of Jean-Pierre Isbouts, his books and his teaching courses. This course takes you to the actual places that feature in the Bible's big stories, from Eden to Golgotha. Jean-Pierre is very well-informed about current archaeological developments and he combines his expertise on history with great on'location' shots. I like his relaxed and measured delivery. He's not selling;he's presenting what he sees and knows and he leaves it up to the viewer to decide the consequences and significance of what we are seeing. I rate this course very highly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exploring Biblical Figures and Landscapes. Professor Jean-Pierre Isbouts masterfully creates an atmosphere of introspection that feels almost meditative as he has in his previous excellent The Great Courses lecture sets. This experience of exploring the Bible is both relaxing and deeply enjoyable and is perfect for late evening viewing or a time of de-stressing. The Professor has an engaging teaching style which encourages reflection, allowing me to connect with the material on a personal level. I have always found that his courses promote a profound sense of introspection, and this one is no exception. The course offers a fascinating journey through the world of Abraham, starting with the very foundations of Christianity. The excellent opening lecture on the book of Genesis starts Professor Isbouts travels into the historical and cultural contexts of key Biblical figures and locations, illuminating the narratives that have shaped faith and understanding for centuries. The breadth of the context, from Abraham to the crucifixion of Christ, provides a comprehensive overview that is is both informative and thought-provoking. Each lecture builds on the previous ones, weaving together the intricate tapestry of biblical history in a way that makes it accessible and engaging. This is not a college level course but more a National Geographical Special on the Bible. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone seeking deeper insights into the Bible. Well worth the investment on all levels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Always interesting and thought-provoking I have enjoyed all Prof. Isbouts' courses - including the ones focused on art as well as Biblical themes, and this one is no exception. His grasp of the source materials and geography (and sometimes geology!) of the Middle East informs a thoughtful and provocative narrative. Our church's adult Christian Education program has benefited greatly from his works!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Incessant background music Why the extra noise? The constant music in the background made this otherwise great program unwatchable. Very irritating. Please remove that! You don’t do that for the other courses. Please don’t!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from High-Level Overview Recommended. This course provides the narrative arc of the entire Christian Bible from Abraham (whom Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all consider as founder) to the Christian missionary Paul of Tarsus. It even includes a lecture devoted to the time between the Christian Old Testament and the Christian New Testament. While individual stories contained in this scope may be familiar to students of this course, assembling them into one continuous narrative arc adds new depth and insight. Although the objective is worthy, the execution is somewhat flawed. Although the presenters are all recognized scholars, the constant background music and the cinematography all have the feel of a slick documentary rather than scholarship. Most of the course focuses on five individuals (Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, and Jesus), stories of which are probably already well-known by most students. The 40 monarchs of the divided kingdoms of Judah and Israel are compressed into just two lectures even though their reigns span nearly 400 years and their stories represent new information for most students. All the women in the Bible are compressed into just one lecture. Dr. Isbouts must teach at a very high level in order to cover so much material in only 16 lectures. His voice is always soft and calm; he never generates excitement. He seamlessly integrates Biblical statements, archaeological findings, and personal speculation to the point that it is often difficult to distinguish among them. He treats all three major monotheistic religions with equal respect. He integrates clips and reading recommendations from John Dominic Crossan, William Dever, Bart Ehrman, Amy-Jill Levine, Jodi Magness, and Hershel Shanks and representatives from such Protestant evangelical bastions as Wheaton College and Biola University. The course guide is average by The Great Courses (TGC) standards. It is written in narrative paragraph format as opposed to outline or bullet format, averaging a little less than 7 pages per lecture, which is common by TGC standards. It has no useful graphics nor does it have any appendices. There are a few recommended reading recommendations at the end of each lecture. I used the video version. As of 2025, it was available only in video. The graphics do not add much, so it is acceptable to listen in audio-only mode such as when commuting or exercising. The course was published in 2025. My rating system: 5 Stars – Every TGC customer should take this course 4 Stars – Recommended 3 Stars – Go ahead and take it 2 Stars – Not recommended 1 Stars – Yuck

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! This is another excellent course about Biblical archeology! I have taken Prof. Isbout's prev NatGeo-produced course on the same subject; also have the NatGeo special publication to celebrate it as well. Bascially, I am fan of Biblical archeology, Bible celebration travel - perhaps one day I will get to travel the footsteps of Jesus - love that course too!, and then of course bible history. I think TGC did an excellent job to produce this "newer" version of biblical arechology and travel. Thanks!
