Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comprehensive Overview While this is taught in history classes, the background and depth are not covered. Johnson's views were diametrically opposed to all that Lincoln and the other Republicans believed. This presentation mixed expert opinions with talented voice actors to bring these events to life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very This lecture is the perfect follow up to the Lincoln series and The Civil War series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good overview of first presidential impeachment A well presented chronicle of the lead up to, and results of, the impeachment of Johnson, focusing on the personalities who made it happen. Factual and enjoyable it warrants 4 stars for good-but-not-great production values and lacking the entertainment pizazz of a 5 star zinger. It feels like something made to run in a TV series, which is not bad, but. On the other hand, the review by MrDarcy below (The Trial of the Century) fully warrants five stars. For some it may be quite enough.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So very apropos to our current situation. I could have saved myself some of the angst I have experienced through the last few years had I listened to this earlier. We grew up thinking that America was inherently great and superior to other societies (From the viewpoint of a White Midwestern Baby Boomer). As I have learned over the course of my years, my education was sadly lacking in truth and content. It provided a modicum of comfort to hear one accounting of a time when our country was badly led by heartless people without regard to Christian principles and decency prevailed. I had never realized the nature of Thaddeus Stephens' personality nor the history of his actions nor the strength of his convictions before this course. Thank you for the lessons learned here. It gives me more hope for the future of our country.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overlooked History! I found this DVD to be very informative. It is a piece of history about a divided country trying to rebuild itself. The transition after Lincoln's assassination to a southern sympathizing Vice President and the events leading to Grant's presidency have a ring to the polarization of politics in the US today.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It greatly expanded my knowledge of this event Very detailed and it explained the actions of all the people involved. Very well done.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pedestrian and shallow Of course I learned a few things from listening for only an hour. But they were mostly trivialities about the personalities involved. No meaningful discussion of the big picture. Very bad value for $14.95. Probably the most disappointing of the many GCs I've listened to-- most of which are excellent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quite interesting; unique topic I have enjoyed many of the Great Courses audio only. Most have been a series of lectures, but this course was just one long lecture. I am rather familiar with American History, but I learned a great deal from this course. The in depth discussion about Thaddeus Stevens was excellent.
