Rated 4 out of 5 by from System Control: Brains and Nerves Dr. Sam Wang’s engaging lectures on “The Neuroscience of Everyday Life” inspire deep appreciation for the marvels of biology. Here are some of the best aspects of this course: * Dr. Wang is unfailingly personable, pleasant, and encouraging. * The professor takes a comprehensive approach to describing the structure and functioning of nervous systems and brains, both in good health and in ailing conditions. * His well-chosen examples of research studies share not only fascinating scientific data, but also insight into how neuroscientists go about their work. * Good use is made of both everyday language and relevant technical terms that he carefully defines. * Dr. Wang’s brief, effective introductions and final summations for each lecture are further plusses. * To quote my wife and study companion, “The professor hits the right level of detail, and tells how it all applies to life.” * Accompanying visual displays and animations are extremely helpful, some of the best provided with any of The Great Courses. Thirty-six 30-minute lectures may not have been enough for all the material that Dr. Wang wanted to discuss. His speech seemed very rapid, and some explanations were a little too brief. These were relatively minor concerns, though. If I had studied this course in 2010, when it was first produced, I’d have rated it as deserving 5-out-of-5 stars. Neuroscience is an especially fast-developing field, however, which persuades me that I ought to alert prospective buyers to the fact that what was then-current information is now somewhat dated, which is why I’ll give the fourteen-year-old course 4-out-of-5 stars. Dramatic recent progress in Brain-Computer Interfaces, brain tumour surgery techniques, and use by neurologists of the CRISPR gene-editing tool are examples of topics that Dr. Wang would surely update if his Great Course could be revised, along with lifestyle practices that have been reconsidered regarding brain health. The 2010 course remains worthwhile, by reason of the strengths cited above. I can still recommend it as a very good introduction to the enduring aims, approaches, and attitudes of neuroscientists.

The professor's delivery is a tad bit flat, and he very often uses his favorite verbal crutch ("now") but this is nit-picking on my part. I learned a lot and conclude that this course was worth the time I devoted to watching.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible example my dear Professor!!!!!!!! Dear Great Courses & Professor Wang, I have to admit, I really appreciate the lectures and the subject. Likely many other sensitive points, one was brought up. You provide an example of how bad Romanian orphanages are and how badly they treat the kids in lesson 19. It is unlikely that you have time travel abilities, unless this course was created prior to 1989, given that circumstance occurred both before and immediately after the revolution in 1989. Everyone deserves an update, and perhaps an apology. You might read a lot due to the nature of your work and wish to perform some study before creating affirmations. You simply disregarded this one. Furthermore, it's not a little one, my dear professor. I appreciate your thoughts, but given your position, you ought to think things through before you speak. I give your course a zero, but this choice is not permitted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly valuable and well presented Where to begin? Neuroscience is an important, developing subject, and Dr Wang is a very good presenter. Neuroscience is not well known to most people, and it must be challenging to put into understandable language. But here it is, carried out with great success. It was a pleasure to follow this course, and to pick up the nuggets of insight that the instructor provides. As a left-handed basketball player in years past, I experienced directly the lefty advantage (in basketball, a left-handed defender has his dominant hand directly opposite the dominant hand of his right-handed opponent; this advantage is lost on offense of course, but there are other factors as described in the course). This work was prepared in 2010, over a dozen years ago. It is still a superb introduction to neuroscience, but there must have been many new discoveries in the interim. As is true of many biological subjects, the foundations are still maturing and what was accepted as true yesterday may not be so today. So I challenge the great courses to update their introduction to neuroscience, preferably with Dr Wang if he is available. I look forward to the results!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding series of lectures I have been taking a number of courses on neuroscience and this is at or near the top. Graphics are outstanding, video is essential. I read some of the criticisms and writing this to offset their poor ratings as I think they unfair. Many seem to relish their ability to disagree with substance as if that makes them intelligent. Assume they are right that there are flaws (none of the courses disagree), to trash the series with a low rating is childish or not intellectually objective to try and inform potential listeners. I for one found his lectures to be outstanding and highly recommend watching. I found the content on influence of expectations on its own to be educational. I also found information to help me understand addictions others have to be critical so not to judge their harmful behaviors.

They helped me understand the mind scientifically and cohesively, and answered many of my confusions and questions about how the mind works. His approach is very ingenious and profound. I'm deeply grateful for his generous teaching and contribution to humanity.

Sam Wang

As a neuroscience researcher, I study how the brain is responsible for our experiences and thoughts. In this course, I wanted to relate that fact to people's everyday lives-from sensation to dreams to autism to Alzheimer's.

Dr. Sam Wang is Associate Professor of Molecular Biology and Neuroscience at Princeton University. He earned his B.S. in Physics from the California Institute of Technology and his Ph.D. in Neurosciences from the Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Wang is a well-known researcher in the field of neuroscience and has published more than 50 papers in peer-reviewed journals. His work includes the discovery that learning mechanisms can act like all-or-none switches, and that bird and mammalian brains share similar architectures for generating complex social relations. Dr. Wang is also the coauthor of the best-selling popular book, Welcome to Your Brain: Why You Lose Your Car Keys But Never Forget How to Drive and Other Puzzles of Everyday Life. The book has been translated into more than 20 languages and received the AAAS/Subaru Science Book of the Year Award in the Young Adult category. Professor Wang has been widely honored for his scholarship and his advances in neuroscience. He has been the recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, the Rita Allen Foundation Young Scholars Fellowship, a Distinguished Young Investigator Award from the W. M. Keck Foundation, and a CAREER award from the National Science Foundation. He was also selected by the American Association for the Advancement of Science as a Congressional Science and Engineering Fellow, and he served on the staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources.
