Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Compressed History of the Vikings Professor Jennifer Paxton delivers another educationally solid Great Courses lecture set. It is difficult for a professor to thoroughly teach an in-depth topic in 12, 30 minute lectures, but this Professor does so. Dr. Paxton is smooth and somewhat dynamic in her delivery: I use Dr. Robert Greenberg as the exemplar benchmark for TGCs faculty: and Professor Paxton's enthusiasm and passion for the subject makes the course lively, informative and very enjoyable. Jennifer supports each viking with current and updated scientific evidence, such as the latest scanning technologies, and historical documents updated by research experts. I enjoyed how the Vikings evolved and their destructive path through Europe, and beyond. Viking life, death, religion, were interesting. This is an excellent course for the Viking historical novice, delivered in a lively and pleasurable fashion. Just was with Dr. Paxton's previous courses, this was enjoyable and well worth the investment. I highly recommend this course and all the others which Professor Paxton has delivered for TGCs. I look forward to her future courses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What's In a Name? What I write here is not a criticism of Dr Paxton, just a clarification of her language when she discusses Norse settlements in North America. She distinguishes between "Greenland," "Newfoundland," and "Vinland." Our Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador comprises both the island of Newfoundland and the area of the mainland just to the northwest of the Island called Labrador. What she calls Vinland is the settlement just at the northern end of the Island. What she labels "Newfoundland" is, of course Labrador. (BTW, please accent the final syllable of Newfoundland. You can get away with accenting the first syllable, as Dr Paxton does, but please, please do not say NewFOUNDland. We cringe to hear it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent Complement to Other TGC Courses This course concentrates on culture rather than history despite the title. Thus, it is an excellent complement to Dr. Harl’s course, The Vikings, also offered by The Great Courses (TGC), which focuses on political history. It is also good in its own right as a stand-alone course. This course asks, “What were the Vikings like and what influence did that have on other societies?” Topics include influence of geography, social standards, the roles of women, death and religion, settlements in Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland, and interaction with English, Scottish, Irish, French, and even Spanish societies. The course is confined to the Viking Age, which spanned from 793 to 1066. I would have appreciated more attention to family life and structure as well as community structure (such as how villages were organized) in the Scandinavian lands. Dr. Paxton is a sound if not exciting lecturer. I have listened to nearly all of her TGC lectures and they are consistently worthwhile. The course guide is good by TGC standards. It is in the now-standard paragraph format as opposed to outline or bullet format. It averages nearly nine pages per lecture, more than most TGC course guides. Surprisingly, there were no maps in the course guide. Neither was there an appendix. It might have been helpful to have biographical notes and perhaps a glossary of special terms. I used the video version. As of 2024, it was available in video streaming and DVD with an audio version available through Audible. There were some useful graphics but basically it could be used in audio-only mode as when driving or exercising. The course was published in 2024. My rating system: 5 Stars – Every TGC customer should take this course 4 Stars – Recommended 3 Stars – Go ahead and take it 2 Stars – Not recommended 1 Stars – Yuck
