Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Course I had two entomology courses in college and found them very interesting. This course adds much to my previous knowledge. The lectures are extremely fascinating and well-delivered. The professor did indeed do a fabulous job at showing why insects do matter. I liked the course so much, I ordered a DVD copy for my sister who is a avid gardener and naturalist. The professor gets an A+ on this course. I hope he will consider doing a follow-up course.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Wife Cracked Me Up… Yeah, the title needs some explanation. I watched this class with my wife. My first degree is in Biology that concentrated on the zoology portion of the subject. So I have had Entomology, Invertebrate Zoology, etc., thus it was familiar territory for me. My wife had a career as a Special Education teacher, and thus had not really explored this particular realm. Some of the macro photography of various insects creeped her out a bit, causing her to making comments that I found more than humorous. I could see her discomfort. At times insects do look like monsters or alien beings, but that is something I find fascinating. Okay, enough of that. I found the organization of the class exceedingly excellent. Normally when I have studied insects in the past, you start by study basic morphology, anatomy if you will, physiology, etc. Then that is followed by a march through the various orders and families of insects. Yes, Professor Solomon started with the basics of anatomy, etc, but then he switched to a more functional approach. How to insects affect humans and the world around us? What are the strategies of various insects for making a living in this world? What may happen if insects are threatened in this changing world? I will admit to having flashbacks with the unit on collecting insects. As part of my Entomology course we had to collect and present 100 different insects. I had memories of running around the fields of central Oklahoma with a collecting net and kill jar. And memories of one of my favorite professors, Dr. Hornuff, God rest his soul, whose doctoral thesis was on the mating habits of damselflies. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Professor Solomon has a great presentation style that is very engaging. Get your geek on. Great course that I highly recommend.

The presenter is so happy in his field and so earnest in his efforts to make us more interested in bugs and to respect and like them. We learned many amazing things. A more advanced course, about how bugs manage do so well with so little discernable brain, would be welcome. They seem to be like very cleverly programmed little robots.

Scott Solomon thoroughly knows and enjoys telling people about all kinds of insects and has some great personal experiences to share. The course is fun and interesting and provides some excellent (and for me surprising) information about insects. The one weakness is that there are times when the instructor talks about an insect behavior, the viewer does not get to actually see a video. It is disappointing. I think including more video examples of would be particularly helpful and enjoyable in a course such as this one. I have not completed the course, yet, but am enjoying it so much I wanted to write this review.

Rice University

Scott Solomon is an Associate Teaching Professor at Rice University, where he teaches ecology, evolutionary biology, and scientific communication. He received his PhD in Ecology, Evolution, and Behavior from The University of Texas at Austin. He has also worked as a visiting researcher with the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC and with São Paulo State University in Rio Claro, Brazil.

Scott has taught field biology courses at Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado and in the rainforests and coral reefs of Belize. He has also been a resident associate at Baker College, one of Rice’s residential colleges, and served as a faculty fellow at Rice’s Center for Teaching Excellence, where he acted as a liaison to other faculty. He received the George R. Brown Award for Superior Teaching and the Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award from Rice University as well as the Rising Star Award from the University of Illinois Laboratory High School.

Scott is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Society for the Study of Evolution. He also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Tropical Ecology. He regularly lectures on science topics at museums, schools, churches, and TEDx events. His writing and photography have appeared in such publications as Aeon, Nautilus, Slate, and WIRED. He is the author of Future Humans: Inside the Science of Our Continuing Evolution.
